Die bulgarische Hauptstadt Sofia wurde im Februar 1998 zum Tagungsort einer internationalen Konferenz der Soziologen. Von Leipzig bis Moskau kamen Teilnehmer zusammen, um Risiken des Überganges zur neuen gesellschaftlichen Ordnung in Ost- und insbesondere Südosteuropa zu diskutieren. Im Mittelpunkt stand die Arbeitslosigkeit als Hauptrisiko, das "in allen diesen Ländern untrennbarer Bestandteil des allen gemeinsamen Transformationsprozesses ist und dennoch jeweils unterschiedliche nationalstaatliche Ausprägungen erfährt". (8) Die Publikation der Konferenzbeiträge ist kein bahnbrechendes Werk geworden. Sein Charme besteht lediglich in der Betrachtungsweise der Theoretiker, die als Laien transformatorische Risiken an dereigenen Haut tagtäglich zu spüren bekommen.
