Der Sammelband ist Ergebnis einer Tagung des Forschungszentrums europäische Integration an der Universität Danzig im Oktober 1995. Themen der Veranstaltung bildeten die Identifizierung, Prüfung und Bewertung der Herausforderungen, die die Umsetzung des Assoziationsabkommens zwischen Polen und der Europäischen Union sowie ein möglicher EU-Beitritt Polens in Polen aufwerfen. Neben rechtspolitischen, finanziellen und währungspolitischen Fragen werden institutionelle und demokratische Probleme der Annäherung und Integration Polens ebenso angesprochen wie die Wirkungen auf einzelne Sektoren der polnischen Wirtschaft. Die Erweiterungsperspektive wird nicht nur von Osten, sondern auch von Westen her, also der EU selbst, kritisch analysiert. Dabei spielen Zeitpläne, Geschwindigkeiten und Perspektiven der Erweiterung eine wichtige Rolle. Die Länderstudie über Polen bietet somit ein Vexierbild der Integrationsproblematik zwischen der EU und Mittelosteuropa, das an einem spezifischen Beispiel die oftmals verstreut vorgetragenen Argumente des Für und Wider, der Chancen und Gefahren für Ost und West bündelt und insofern exemplarischen Charakter für die Erweiterungsdebatte besitzt.
